ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores themes of sexuality, sensitivity and religion and the ways in which they coexist with the Caribbean identity. To me, these aspects are inherent parts of my “Caribbeanness” and I seek to challenge ideas that say otherwise. I aim to discuss these facets through the lens of multiplicity vs fragmentation. Whereas the former explores ideas of finding community or a sense of belonging through the intersection of these characteristics, the latter explores how they can simultaneously isolate you from wider society. Through my process, I seek to reconcile with these aspects of my identity and decipher the idea of an inherent “Caribbeanness”. In undergoing this personal journey, I want to reclaim aspects of the Caribbean identity that have long been defined by oppressive powers and present an authentic narrative that opposes such.
